Manafort shared Trump polling information with Ukrainian affiliate throughout 2016 marketing campaign

Trump Tells ABC’s Jon Karl ‘I Didn’t know Anything About’ Manafort Collusion With Russia

- Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort shared polling data during the 2016 presidential campaign with a business associate accused of having ties to Russian intelligence, and prosecutors say he lied to them about it, according to a court filing. Prosecutors say Manafort breached their plea agreement by lying, but defense lawyers argued that any misstatements were simple mistakes made by a man coping with illness, exhaustion and extensive questioning from investigators.

Manafort, former chair of the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty a year ago to conspiracy charges in Washington and faces sentencing in a separate case in Virginia, though none of the charges are directly concerned with the alleged collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

Trump has long denied any wrongdoing during the campaign and has labeled Mueller's probe a "phony witch hunt". However, Manafort wrote in one August 2016 email to his accountant that he expected a payment of $2.4 million in November 2016 for work he did in Ukraine, according to trial documents.

The revelation came this week in court documents filed by Manafort's defense lawyers that accidentally included details that were meant to be redacted. Manafort spokesman Jason Maloni said Tuesday the Madrid trip mentioned in the filing occurred in January or February 2017- months after Manafort was ousted from the campaign and as Trump was taking office. They since confirmed that he was interviewed by Mueller's team. He entered a plea agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller on September 14, 2018, but prosecutors have since alleged that Manafort has violated the terms of the deal by lying about certain topics.

Russia, which illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, wanted a peace plan so the U.S. would remove the sanctions it imposed because of the invasion.

The lawyers also said they reserved the right to fight back if Mueller brought new charges surrounding the allegations that Manafort lied to prosecutors.

A statement to CNN on behalf of Akmetov said: "Mr. Akhmetov never requested nor received any polling data or any other information about the 2016 United States elections from Paul Manafort or Konstantin Kilimnik".

Manafort earned millions from his Ukrainian political work over several years.

Mueller's team has also charged Kilimnik with conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice.
