U.K. Labour leader agrees no deal Brexit would be 'catastrophic'

There are continuing pro and anti Brexit demonstrators outside the Houses of Parliament in London

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn gave his clearest indication yet that his party is ready to call a no-confidence ballot within days of Theresa May losing a United Kingdom parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal.

My message to Parliament this weekend is simple: it is time to forget the games and do what is right for our country.

"A day is long time in politics so things can change but as it stands it is likely I will vote for the deal, yes", he said.

Vince Cable, leader of the pro-EU Liberal Democrats, said parliament would act to prevent a no deal Brexit, and could ultimately seek to prevent Brexit altogether.

The MP for Bassetlaw told Sky News' Sophy Ridge he won't be the only one from Jeremy Corbyn's party to vote with the Tories when the prime minister's deal goes before parliament on Tuesday.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay told the BBC's Andrew Marr show: "There are lots of different plans being put forward by members of parliament that don't respect the result or risk no deal".

He said: "We will table a motion of no confidence in the government at a time of our choosing, but it's going to be soon, don't worry about it".

A no-deal Brexit would be "catastrophic" for industry and trade, Corbyn told the BBC.

MPs will gather at Westminster Monday to resume their marathon debate on the Brexit bill ahead of the vote early Tuesday evening.

He said: "Four decisions need to be made: MPs should vote against no deal; they should vote against the Prime Minister's deal; the European Union should be asked to extend Article 50 deadline to stop the United Kingdom crashing out in March; and MPs should come together to support a new referendum on European Union membership". Mrs May is expected to suffer a big defeat when parliament votes on Tuesday.

Under the rebels' plan, reported in the Sunday Times, the Government would lose control of parliamentary business which would threaten Brexit legislation and the Government's ability to govern.

Former prime minister Sir John Major has said revoking Article 50 is the "only sensible course" but accepted this would be "politically uncomfortable".

"We have a mechanism which will give parliament control of the Brexit negotiations and ensure we do not leave the European Union without a deal on March 29", he said.

May faced further opposition to her deal from her former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab who believes the United Kingdom should pursue a hard-Brexit.

Mrs May faced further opposition to her deal from her former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab.

"I would love a general election because that would allow us to give a very clear statement to the Tory government as to where we're standing", he said.

But he said he does not have the military "actively involved" in no-deal planning beyond the secondment of a "small number" of staff from the Ministry of Defence.
